Horace Mann became a lawyer, a Massachusetts state legislator, and them founded the Common Schools ovement, which promised a free public education to every child in Massachusetts. The movement spread to every state in the US.

Mann became the first Massachusetts secretary of education and reformed the teaching of reading, sadly without success.
