Samuel Orton

Dr. Samuel Orton studied reading disabilities in children and coined the term "dyslexia" to describe them.

When Arthur Gates's new "sight method" or "look-say" method of teaching reading appeared, Orton severely criticized it in the Journal of Educational Psychology.

"the sight method of teaching reading...proves an actual obstacle to reading progress, and moreover I believe that here...faulty teaching methods may not only prevent the acquisition of academic education by children of average capacity but may also give rise to far reaching damage to their emotional life."

This was a quarter century before Rudolf Flesch's Why Johnny Can't Read!"
